 Theatrical Experience/Training

Melville Lovatt studied playwriting for six years at The City Literary Institute, Drury Lane, London. He has been writing over a long period and has written in total, twenty stage plays, two Television plays and two full length screenplays.

A number of his plays have won playwriting awards.

'The Powers That Be' won first prize in The Sussex Playwrights Club annual full length play competition.
'Small Mercies', also a full length play, won both a Jack Langford Memorial Award and a Derek Lomas Memorial Award.
Very recently, two one act plays, 'The Grave' and 'The Kiss' were shortlisted for The Diana Raffle one act play award.

He is closely connected to Belmont Theatre Company with whom he also acts and directs.

He regards all his plays as 'investigations' in which he follows the clues, which he leaves
for himself through the characters, as he goes along.

As a playwright, he is interested in all the enduring themes: love; sex; power; jealousy; isolation and death.

He is also very interested in the language which lies in pauses and silences between and under the spoken words.

Melville Lovatt is married with two children.
